As the weather heats up, now is the best time to refresh your awareness of hydration and how important water is it to keeping your body performing optimally. It isn’t just the right foods that keep our bodies fueled - hydration levels have a heavy impact on how well your body can build and recover. Athletic Republic has some reminders to keep you on track.

Drinking the right amount of water, and how often.

When it comes to staying hydrated during your workout, the amount of water you need to drink depends on the activity you are doing. In addition to these tips, listen to your body - if at any point during your workout you begin to become dizzy or nauseous, stop and get water immediately.

Around 2 to 3 hours before your workout or training sessions, try to drink between 17 to 20 ounces of water. This can help to give your body the best start as you begin to strain and refine your muscles. As you continue to work out, aim to drink between 7 to 10 ounces of water every 10 minutes. If you are doing intense exercise or training for extended periods of time, speak with your trainer about supplementing your water intake with a sports drink.

Maintaining hydration levels after your workout.

Often overlooked, maintaining hydration levels post workout is just as important to helping your body build, refine and recover. Once your training is complete, try to drink 8 ounces of water prior to sleeping. Discuss with your trainer the best option for you to stay hydrated post workout, and any techniques or specific hydration drinks that can complement your water intake.
