How to Increase Your Running Distance

Setting new goals and pushing yourself beyond your limits is always a great option. Of course, how you go about this is what makes all the difference. When it comes to increasing your running distance, slow and steady is the way to go. Before your get frustrated by your slow progress, use these tips to help you along the way.

Wear the Proper Running Gear

Your running gear has less to do with looking cool than it does with keeping your comfortably going as you try to reach your running goals. To start, your shoes need to be made for the job. Buying the most expensive running shoes isn't always the solution either. When you do get new running shoes, remember to give yourself some time to break them in before trying to run a marathon in them. Next up is the clothing you wear while running. Be sure your running gear fits you properly, meaning it doesn't move around too much as your train. This movement isn't only distracting, it can also cause chafing and discomfort.

It's All in Your Head

Of course the shape you're in has a lot to do with how much you'll be able to run, but the way you think also has a huge impact on the distance you can cover. Positive thoughts as you run can be a huge motivator and can even help you reach new distances. Before setting out for a run, think of some positive things you can keep in your mind. It also helps to have a mantra that you can go back to when you hit an obstacle during your run. It also helps to break a long run down into smaller, more manageable chunks.

Look for Support

As much as it may seem like it, running isn't a completely solo sport. The support you get from your family, friends, coaches, and anyone else can be a huge motivating factor that you shouldn't ignore. Training can take a ton out of you because it's hard physically and mentally, so a support system is a must. Take Care of Yourself

To be able to run the distance you're working towards you'll have to do more than train, you'll also have take care of yourself. This doesn't mean drinking endless amounts of protein shakes and vitamins either. Getting plenty of sleep, eating nutritious meals, and staying hydrated will all help you take on longer distances more effectively.

Slow and Steady

It makes sense that you want to reach your goals almost as soon as you set them, but this isn't possible or even recommended. In fact, increasing the distance you can run too quickly can often result in running injuries that may even set you back further. Avoid these frustrating injuries by taking your progress on slowly and steadily.  Avoid increasing your distance more than 10% each week so that you body has a chance to get used to the increase. You should also slow your pace down to a conversational pace so that your body isn't always being pushed to its max. Do incorporate some bursts at a faster pace since this can help strengthen your heart. Try to stick to 3-4 running sessions a week with one session being your long run.

Recovery Time

Recovery is such an important part of reaching new running distances, so don't blow this off. Since you're pushing your body harder, you definitely want to be sure you are able to recover fully between sessions. Your diet, hydration, sleep, and stretching will all help your body recover and prepare for your next run. Don't forget to eat carbs and proteins 30 minutes after a session since this is when your body will have an easier time absorbing nutrients.
